If you’re a fan of the Mega Drive at all, then you are likely to know the name Yuzo Koshiro, as the Japanese composer was responsible for some of the console’s greatest music. As his career progressed, Koshiro branched out into other roles as well, such as serving as producer on Beyond Oasis / The Story of Thor—one of many projects that came out of the studio he founded in 1990, Ancient. Now, all of these years later, Koshiro and his team return to Sega’s 16-bit system with all of the knowledge they’ve gained over the years to produce a new horizontal shooter titled Earthion. There’s no doubt the game will have an amazing soundtrack, but what’s evident from the footage seen so far is that it’ll also be pushing the Mega Drive hard in terms of visuals and gameplay. While a 2024 release isn’t set in stone just yet, progress on the game seems to be going at a decent pace, and if there’s anyone who knows what goes into putting together a game for that hardware, it’s Koshiro and crew.
